Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Athletes will gain the option to challenge specific calls from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development follows just a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review specific decisions, such as:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.
Practical Application
An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at all of its events.
Other Changes
Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
